Video Village is an innovative film camp designed for teens aged 12-15 from high-crime neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The camp’s mission is to transform the struggles of these teens into powerful stories through film and media production, providing them with an expressive outlet and introducing them to potential career paths.

Meet The Leadership

Dominic Smith

Director

Domonic "Domo" Smith, a director from Kalamazoo, Michigan, has over a decade of experience in narrative directing and five years in commercial directing. He honed his skills at his local cable access center and graduated from the Art Institute of Tampa. Domo has worked with major brands like T-Mobile, Lowes, Little Caesars, and Facebook, and collaborated with high-profile names such as Taraji P. Henson, Michael B. Jordan, The Weeknd, and Justin Verlander. Known for his strong agency relationships and high-quality productions, he approaches each project with the mantra, “I’m an Editor first, Director second.” A devoted father of twins, Domo creates inclusive and empowering environments on set, continuously pushing the boundaries of storytelling and innovation to leave a lasting impact on the industry.

Ron Emile is a multi-talented creative, filmmaker and journalist. Hispanola Productions, named after his Haitian and Dominican parents, is a media company Emile started because of his strong desire to tell nuanced stories.

Orientation (Winter Break)

Activities

• Introduction to camp and participants.
• Breakdown into groups based on interests: Directing, Writing, Makeup, Sound, Talent (acting).
• Workshops led by industry professionals on the basics of filmmaking.
• Start the preproduction process for the films.

Team-Building Retreat in Atlanta (Spring Break)

Activities

• Retreat out of the city to Atlanta for team bonding and preproduction finalization.
• Mental health sessions to help teens express and release trauma.
• Field trip to all of Atlanta’a top film studios (CNN , Cartoon Network , Tyler Perry Studios, ect.)

Film Production (Summer Break)

Activities

• Full-scale film production with local and regional crews assisting.

• Teens lead the production, directing professionals based on their vision.

• Post-production of the films.

Showcase

• Event: Community screening in the fall.
• Purpose: Allow teens to present their work, provide a platform for their voices, and engage the community in their experiences.
